How to Gain Control When Everything's Out of Control

Yup, this sucks.

COVID-19 is highly dangerous, highly contagious and spreading exponentially across the globe. The stock market has plummeted. Plans are delayed. Events are cancelled, travel is over and most of us are working from home while trying to entertain bored children. The world is rife with complexity, uncertainty and ambiguity. And no one knows when it will end.

It seems none of us are in control of our lives at the moment.

So the way I see it, we have two choices:

a.) A nightly wine-soaked Netflix binge.

or...

b.) We can get up and get going.

Just what are we supposed to get up and get going at, you ask?

Well, first, your job. But then, how about your tax return? Or cleaning out that out of control junk drawer(s)? Or organizing your closets? Or painting that thing that needs painting? Oooh… I know! How about cleaning out your garage?

Whatever it is, choose something big, something you’ve been dreading, and something that you’ll feel really great about when it’s done.

And then, choose something fun that you’ve always meant to get to. Learn to make bread or bake a pie. Try some cross-stitch or knitting or wood carving. Learn Photoshop. Start that novel. Give mindfulness meditation a whirl. Learn a language on Babbel. Do some high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in your living room (you might want to get the kids involved in that one). Catch up on all those books you’ve been meaning to read.

Now how do you feel?

I suspect pretty damn good. And, very much in control.

Here's the thing most of us forget...

We’re always in control of the two most important determinants in our lives:

a.) How we spend our time.

and...

b.) Where we direct our focus.

Powerful stuff if applied correctly. And not just during the #coronapocalypse.

So get up. And get going.
